ARLINGTON, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team got it’s season underway with a forgettable exhibition game at UT-Arlington. The Mavs handed the Rams a harsh 80-52 defeat at Texas Hall.
The Mavericks led 22-4 less than ten minutes into the contest. UTA’s stiff defense earned a 41-15 halftime lead after holding Texas Wesleyan to 27% shooting in the period.
UTA outscored Texas Wesleyan 39-37 in the second half and cruised to the big win. The lone bright spot for the Rams was Sam Houston State transfer, Kelvin Williams. Williams finished with a game-high 25 points including nine of the Rams’ 15 first half points.
“As a team we just didn’t play well at all,” said head coach Terry Waldrop. “Kelvin gave us a strong effort, but overall we did not give the effort that we needed to compete."
Waldrop went on to say that while it was disappointing, “it’s still an exhibition game and a learning experience. Hopefully we’ll figure out what we need to do.”
CJ Higginbotham added 13 points for Texas Wesleyan. UTA placed four players in double-figure scoring led by Larry Posey’s 18 points.
Texas Wesleyan will have to recover quickly. The defending NAIA Division I National Champions open regular season play on Saturday when they host Dallas Christian College. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Center. |
