FORT WORTH, TX: Basketball season is back and the Texas Wesleyan University Lady Rams improved to 1-0 with a 61-52 win over Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College at the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday.
Texas Wesleyan led by just two points with four minutes remaining in the first half, but the Lady Rams closed the half on a 13-3 run to take control of the contest.
In the second half, the Saints chipped away and cut the deficit to just two points at 40-38, but once again the Lady Rams responded. Kim Gatlin and Nastassia Brown led an 11-2 run that allowed Texas Wesleyan to cruise to the 61-52 victory.
Brown poured in 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and had six steels in her return to the court after sitting out last year with an injury. Gatlin led the team in her first game at Texas Wesleyan with 17 points. Hillsdale was led by Amber Vickers who turned in a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards.
The Saints out rebounded the Rams 53-46, but Texas Wesleyan forced 26 turnovers.
“It’s definitely a positive to get that first win,” said head coach Stacy Francis.
The Lady Rams hit the road for their next nine contests. They will play at Oklahoma Christian University, who finished last season ranked 13th in the nation, on Saturday, November 4. That contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Oklahoma City, OK.
