FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team improved to 3-1 on the young season with a win over Parker College on Wednesday. The Rams knocked off the Patriots 98-73 in the Sid Richardson Center.
Texas Wesleyan put the game out of reach quickly, jumping ahead 21-10 just over six minutes into the game. They then stretched that lead to 21 (58-37) at the break. The Rams’ domination in the first period was thanks largely to Evan Patterson who poured in 28 of his game-high 29 points in the half.
The Rams came out firing in the second half, scoring the first seven points in the frame. A three pointer from Craig Wrice gave the Rams their largest lead at 92-57 with 7:08 to play. The Patriots finished the game on a 16-6 run, but it was much too late as Texas Wesleyan prevailed 98-73.
The Rams continued their domination of the boards taking a rebounding margin of 49-31. To date Texas Wesleyan has out rebounded its opponents by 16 boards per game. The Rams shot just 47% from the field, but made up for that by hitting 25-of-28 (89%) of their free throws.
Patterson’s 29 points led all scorers. CJ Higginbotham finished with 15, while Kelvin Williams had 12 and Nino Etienne pitched in 11. The Patriots were led by the strong inside play of Devin Nightengale and Jay Humphrey who finished with 23 and 12 points respectively.
The Rams will see their next action in Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s Pepsi Classic. They will take on Galilee College on Friday at 4:00 p.m. in Waxahachie, TX. Saturday marks a much-anticipated meeting of 6th ranked Texas Wesleyan and 7th ranked LSU-Shreveport. |
