NEW ORLEANS, LA:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (1-3) made a tremendous comeback against Loyola University (2-3) on Saturday.  Unfortunately the Lady Rams came up just short as the Wolfpack held on for a 68-64 win.

Loyola dominated the first half and took a 42-28 lead into the locker room. However, the Lady Rams would not go down without a fight.

The Lady Rams whittled the lead down to 49-38 with 14 minutes remaining.  Shawntay Anglin and Nastassia Brown then combined for six unanswered points to cut the deficit to a manageable five points (49-45) with 12 minutes to play.

With 8:37 to play, Stacy Francis called timeout to stop a 7-0 run that had given Loyola a 58-46 lead.  Texas Wesleyan came out of that timeout and responded with a 14-2 run that tied the game at 60 with 3:37 remaining.

In the final minute, Jennifer Peoples hit one-of-two free throws to bring the score to 66-64 Loyola.  The Lady Rams then got a defensive stop to regain possession with 34 seconds on the clock.  With 17 seconds to go, a Britannia Champion three-point attempt that would have given the Lady Rams the lead just missed its mark.

After a Texas Wesleyan foul, the Wolfpack’s Keily Schork drained a pair of free throws to seal the win for Loyola.

Texas Wesleyan out rebounded Loyola 32-30 while the Wolfpack took an edge in shooting 47%-43%.  The difference in the game came at the charity stripe where Loyola hit 23-of-28 (82%) while Texas Wesleyan managed just 15-of-22 (68%).

Nastassia Brown led all scorers with 19 points.  Sheleatha Simmons finished with 12, and Pilar Pinkus added 10 for Texas Wesleyan.  Loyola’s Trenell Smith led four members of the Wolfpack in double-figure scoring with 16 points.
