SALINA, KS: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (2-3) took a thrilling 51-49 win against the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes. The Lady Coyotes are hosting the Coyote Thanksgiving Classic this weekend. Texas Wesleyan closed the game on an 11-0 run that was capped by back-to-back three’s from Kim Gatlin to take the nail-bighting win.
In the first half, the Coyotes led by as many as 12 (23-11), but the Lady Rams cut the deficit to single digits, 25-18 at halftime.
After shooting just 20% in the first half, Texas Wesleyan shot 46% in the second frame to get themselves back into the game. The Rams started the half on a 12-2 run capped by a Britannia Champion three-pointer that gave them a 30-27 lead with just over 14 minutes to play.
The Coyotes pulled back ahead and led 37-27 with 5:26 on the clock when Texas Wesleyan made a phenomenal comeback. With the score at 49-40, Gatlin drained a three to cut the margin to just six points. After a defensive stop, Nastassia Brown made it 49-45 with 2:02 remaining. The Lady Rams then forced a turnover, and Gatlin nailed another three to put her team with a point at 49-48. After another defensive stop, DeLisa Williams found Gatlin for the game-winner.
Gatlin finished with a game-high 16 points. Champion and Brown each scored eight for the Lady Rams. The Coyotes were led by Ascendra Peter’s 16 points.
KWU out rebounded Texas Wesleyan 46-38, but the Rams out scored the Coyotes 18-12 from long range and 9-3 at the free throw line.
Texas Wesleyan will play Tabor College in their final game of the Coyote Classic tomorrow. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off. |
