LADY RAMS WIN BATTLE WITH LIONS

WAXAHACHIE, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (10-4, 3-0 RRAC) found itself in a battle with Southwestern Assemblies of God University (2-11, 0-3) at the Lion’s Full Life Center on Saturday.  However, the Lady Rams outlasted the Lions and came out with a 63-55 win.

 

After five lead changes in the first half, Britannia Champion’s jumper with five seconds to play sent the teams to the locker room tied at 25.

 

The game continued to go back and forth until Moneke Smallwood’s jumper with 6:27 on the clock gave the Rams the lead for good at 47-46.  On the ensuing possession, Andria Mitchell got a steal and Keegan Harry converted a layup to give the Rams a three point advantage.

 

The lead swelled to six points at 56-50, and the Rams held a 59-54 advantage entering the final minute of the contest.  In the final seconds, Texas Wesleyan hit all four of its free throws to pull away for the 63-55 win.

 

Texas Wesleyan continued to dominate the boards 52-41.  Smallwood led all scorers with 17 points.  Champion added 12 points and eight rebounds.  Brittany Turner finished with eight points and 11 boards.

 

SAGU was led by Stephanie Hawkins’ 14 points.

 

The Lady Rams return to the court on Monday, when they host Paul Quinn College in Red River Athletic Conference action.  That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in the Sid Richardson Center.
