LADY RAMS RUN OVER LADY LIONS

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (16-8, 7-4 RRAC) took a conference a win over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (3-20, 1-11), defeating the Lady Loins 81-71 on Saturday.

The Lady Rams came out a little flat and let the Lady Lions jump out to an 11-2 lead with 16:27 left. The Lady Rams then went on a 10-3 run to trail by 2 (12-14) with 12:51 remaining. Sheleatha Simmons tied the game at 16 with a jumper at the 11:06 mark.

Despite the Lady Rams’ 33-25 lead with 4:20 left in the half, SAGU fought back and took the lead 37-36 at the break with a jumper from Heather Jefferson at the half time buzzer.

The Lady Rams got good help from their bench in the first half as they contributed 20 of the 36 points. Kim Gatlin knocked down eight first half points while Simmons tallied six.

In the second half, the Lady Rams took charge and led by as many as 14 on the way to an 81-71 conference win over the Lady Lions.

Moneke Smallwood finished the game with 14 points and six assists. Gatlin went on a shooting spree and gave the Lady Rams 20 points, six assists, four steals, and five rebounds. The stand out of the game however was the 5-11 Junior from Dallas, Brittany Turner.  She blazed her way to a double-double, matching her career-highs in scoring and rebounding with 22 points and 16 boards.  Turner also added a pair of assists in the win.

The Lady Rams return to action on Monday, February 18, as they travel to Dallas to take on Paul Quinn College. Game time is set for a 5:30 start.
