FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (21-8, 4-0 RRAC) used a seven-run fifth inning to notch their tenth consecutive win. The Rams bested Paul Quinn College (7-26, 1-3) 9-3 at LaGrave Field in Red River Athletic Conference action.
Leo Sotero reached on a bunt single and later scored on a single from Cullen Griffith in the second. The Tigers then took advantage of two Texas Wesleyan errors to plate two more runs and go ahead 3-0.
Brandon Frazier led off the third inning with a walk, stole second, and later scored the Rams’ first run when he and Harrison Law executed a double-steal in a first and third situation.
The Texas Wesleyan bats finally came to life in the fifth inning. Frazier drew a one-out walk, stole second, and scored on a single from Kyle Harmon. Zach Smith followed with his first of two homeruns on the day to give the Rams a 4-3 lead. The floodgates the opened up and Texas Wesleyan added an RBI double from Antoine Cole, and RBI singles from Taylor Miller and Jerry Fisher.
A solo homer from Smith in the eighth inning capped the scoring at 9-3.
Jayson Rachuig (3-2) earned the win after allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out four in six innings pitched. Patrick Jackson took the loss for Paul Quinn after allowing eight runs on seven hits and seven walks in 4.2 innings.
Smith was 2-for-4 at the plate with two home runs, three RBI, and two runs scored. Harmon added a pair of hits.
Butch Ballez had an impressive streak come to an end. In his previous four ball-games, Ballez had gone 11-for-11 at the plate with five doubles, and two home runs.
The Rams and Tigers will complete their series with a doubleheader on Saturday. |
