FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (31-12, 12-1 RRAC) tied three records on Friday. Fort the second time this season, the Rams matched the school record for hits in a game with 23. On Friday they also matched the school record with eight doubles. In addition, senior pitcher Hayden Lackey tied the NAIA national record by making the 95th relief appearance of his career. All of that added up to a 16-1 shellacking of Southwestern Assemblies of God University (15-21, 7-6).
SAGU got on the board first when they turned a leadoff walk into a run with an RBI single from Rance Melton.
Then the Rams came to bat. Texas Wesleyan sent 16 hitters to the plate in the first inning and scored nine runs on ten hits including a three-run homer from Kyle Harmon and doubles from Butch Ballez, Taylor Miller, Ryan Jacobi, and a pair from Brandon Frazier.
The Rams picked up where they left off in the second, scoring on a leadoff home run form Antoine Cole and adding two more runs on two singles and another double from Frazier.
A two-run single from Zach Smith in the fourth, an RBI single from Ben Kliever in the fifth, and an RBI double from Colby Tomassi in the sixth brought the score to 16-1.
The top two hitters in the Texas Wesleyan order accounted for five of the eight doubles. Frazier went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three runs scored while Jacobi went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored.
Thirteen of the fifteen Rams who had an at bat hit safely in the contest.
Jayson Rachuig (6-2) picked up the win after allowing one run on four hits while striking out three in four innings of work.
Lackey tossed 1.1 perfect innings of relief. His 24th appearance of the season gave him 95 relief appearances in his career, tying Jason Elkins’ record (North Georgia, 2000-02). Lackey has made 96 total appearances and is just six shy of breaking the national record of 101.
The Rams and Lions will complete their three-game Red River Athletic Conference series on Saturday. Tomorrow’s doubleheader will be played at LaGrave Field although the Lions will be the home team on the scoreboard. Game one is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first-pitch. |
