OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (40-15) was defeated 13-6 at Oklahoma City University (50-10) in the NAIA Region VI Tournament on Tuesday.
The 19th ranked Rams squared off with the host team, 4th ranked Oklahoma City University in first round action. The Rams are seeded fifth in the tournament in spite of a resume that includes 40 wins, a victory over top ranked Lubbock Christian University, and two wins at third seeded Wayland Baptist University.
The Stars, who entered the contest 12 home runs shy of the NAIA record of 141, got on the board early. An RBI double from Brent Weaver and a two-run homer from David Dennis gave OCU a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
In the second, Jerry Fisher singled with one out and scored on a single from Ben Kliever. With runners at first and third, the Rams executed a double steal with Harrison Law scoring the second run of the frame. An infield single from Blake Walker plated Kliever with the tying run before David Odquist induced a double-play ball to escape further damage.
With two outs in the second, the Stars regained control with another RBI double from Weaver and a three-run homer from Dennis bringing the score to 7-3.
In the top of the fifth, Ryan Jacobi led off with a bunt single. Jacobi then advanced to third on a double from Walker and scored on a wild pitch. In the seventh, Walker ripped a leadoff double and advanced to third on a single from Brandon Frazier. An OCU error allowed Walker to score and left runners at first and third. Antoine Cole then plated Frazier with a groundball bringing the Rams within one run at 7-6.
Brent Weaver ripped his third RBI double of the day in the bottom of the seventh. The Stars added RBIs from Carey Crain and Brandon Moss , but Joey Evans got back-to-back strikeouts to leave the bases loaded and hold the score to 10-6.
OCU got a two run homer from Kirk Walker and an RBI single form Crain in the bottom of the eighth to account for the 13-6 final.
Dennis’ two home runs moved him into a tie for the national lead with 26 on the season.
Jayson Racuigh (7-3) took the loss after allowing nine runs on 13 hits in six plus innings of work.
Blake Walker went 3-for-4 at the plate with three doubles. Fisher and Jacobi each added a pair of hits for the Rams.
Texas Wesleyan will play RRAC rival Northwood University in an elimination game on Wednesday. That game is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. first pitch. Northwood suffered a 15-9 loss at the hands of Lubbock Christian. |
