PLYMOUTH, IN: The 10th ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s golf team finished 10th at the 57th NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship at Indiana National Golf Club. The Rams shot a round of 298 in Friday’s final round to move into the top-10.
The University of British Columbia won the title by 12 strokes over second place Oklahoma Christian University. BC finished at four over par, 1156.
Point Loma Nazarene’s Sam Cyr shot a fourth consecutive sub par round. After a final round 70 he won the individual title at -8, 280.
Kevin Doskocil led the Rams on Friday with a round of 73. Mitch Hendon shot a final round of 75 and finished tied for 17th overall at six over par. Stuart Martin birdied holes three, four, and five in succession before a bogey on six and a double bogey on seven dropped him to 75 for the day. Paco Saracho also shot a round of 75, while Armando Villarreall shot 82.
Region VI flexed its muscle in the tournament. Region VI had the most qualifers, six, of any region, and all six of those teams finished in the top 13. Oklahoma Christian and Oklahoma City finished second and third overall. Wayland Baptist finished fifth, Texas Wesleyan tenth, Northwood twelfth, and Southern Nazarene thirteenth.
“We were fortunate to pass a couple and get into the top-10 today,” commented head coach Kevin Millikan. “The course was more difficult today, but we managed maybe our best round of the tournament. I’m very proud of Mitch. Finishing 17th was a great way for a senior to go out.”
