FORT WORTH, TX: The Abilene Christian University women’s soccer team won its inaugural match. The 1-0 win came at the expense of Texas Wesleyan University in its season opener at Martin Field.
The two teams played through a scoreless first half and the game seemed destined for overtime when ACU’s Jackie Gentile found Lyndsey Womack on the right side for a game-winning goal in the 87th minute.
The Rams were unable to find the net in the final three minutes and Abilene Christian came away with the win.
Texas Wesleyan’s Holly Rowland gave an outstanding effort in goal. The senior recorded nine saves in the loss. Paige Farmer needed just two saves to pick up the win for ACU.
The Wildcats out shot the Lady Rams 20-6 and led 7-1 in corner kicks.
“Usually I am frustrated about not finishing, but today I am upset about not creating,” head coach Josh Gibbs commented. “We will focus on being more dangerous on Sunday.” Gibbs went on to say, “Congratulations to Abilene Christian on their first win. They were able to finish today and they deserved it.”
The Lady Rams will host East Central University on Sunday. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start at Martin Field.
