August 30, 2007

IRVINE, CA:  The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (1-4), which features four seniors and eight freshman, pushed fourth ranked Concordia University at Irvine (4-0) to four games for the first time this season.  The Eagles prevailed 3-1 with scores of 30-23, 30-17, 28-30, and 30-20.

In game one, the Lady Rams did not allow the Eagles, who had taken each of their previous three matches in three games, to lead until a kill by Ashley Robins put Concordia on top 17-16.  The Rams trailed by just one, 20-19, before Concordia closed the game on a 10-4 run.

In game two, the Rams were within striking distance at 17-13, when the Eagles opened a double-digit lead at 23-13 and ran away with the 30-17 win.

In game three, Texas Wesleyan trailed 5-1 at the start, but rallied to take the lead at 8-7.  Concordia regained the lead and pushed ahead by as many as five (15-10), but the Lady Rams showed no quit.  Texas Wesleyan regained the lead at 26-25 and closed out the game at 30-28.

In game four, the Eagles jumped out to a 13-7 lead early on.  The Rams closed the gap to four points at 14-10, but Concordia ended the match on a 10-4 run taking the final game 30-20.

Sandra Ayala turned in a game-high 16 kills to go with 13 digs.  Ashley Mock recorded 25 digs, while freshman Evoni Darling notched a career-high 44 assists.

The Rams return to action on Friday, when they take on Carroll College at Concordia Irvine.  That match is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. pacific standard time.
