DALLAS, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (5-7, 1-0 RRAC) took its first Red River Athletic Conference win on Tuesday. The Rams topped the Paul Quinn College Tigers (1-3, 0-1 RRAC) in three games with scores of 30-14, 30-15, and 30-18.
Freshmen Brittney Person and Kristine Downs made the most of some extended playing time by leading the team with 12 kills apiece. Evoni Darling tallied 33 assists and five service aces. Ashley Mock racked up a team-high 10 digs.
The Rams will travel to Waxahachie, TX, to take on Southwestern Assemblies of God University and Wayland Baptist University on Thursday. Those matches are scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. respectively.
This weekend Texas Wesleyan will host the 1st-Annual Wesleyan-Hughes Classic. The tournament will feature nine teams with continuous matches from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The tournament will support the Becky Hughes endowment. Hughes coached volleyball at Wesleyan from 1979-1991. A member of the Texas Wesleyan Hall of Fame, Hughes still holds school records for coaching wins with 369 and winning percentage .655 (369-194). Her Wesleyan volleyball teams made nine appearances at the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament. She continues to contribute to Texas Wesleyan, the volleyball program, and volleyball communities on a national level.
