WAXAHACHIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (7-7) took a pair of wins against two of the best teams in the NAIA’s Region VI on Thursday. The third ranked Rams knocked off #5 Southwestern Assemblies of God University (9-4) in three games and took #7 Wayland Baptist University (7-4) in five. Ashley Mock highlighted the day by posting a school record 51 digs against Wayland Baptist.
The Rams started the day by winning an epic game-one 37-35 against SAGU. They then swept the match by taking game two 30-19 and game three 30-24.
Sandra Ayala posted a double-double with 16 kills and 24 digs, while Liz Meng had 12 kills and 17 digs. Erinn Mock added 14 kills to the attack. Evoni Darling finished with 50 assists and Ashley Mock posted 20 digs.
Mock was just getting started. In the day’s second match she finished with 51 digs, shattering the previous school record of 40 set by Carmen Biel in 1995.
The Rams took game one 30-26, but dropped games two and three, 24-30 and 29-31. Texas Wesleyan kept their composure and won a tight game four 30-28 and closed out the match with a 15-11 win in game five.
The Rams got a balanced offense from Meng, Ayala, and Miller. Meng had an outstanding match with a career-high 27 kills to go with 20 digs. Ayala posted 14 kills and 22 digs. Miller had 15 kills and 19 digs. Darling set the offense up with a season-high 50 assists.
Friday and Saturday Texas Wesleyan will host the 1st-Annual Hughes-Wesleyan Classic. The tournament will feature nine teams with continuous matches from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The tournament will support the Becky Hughes endowment. Hughes coached volleyball at Wesleyan from 1979-1991. A member of the Texas Wesleyan Hall of Fame, Hughes still holds school records for coaching wins with 369 and winning percentage .655 (369-194). Her Wesleyan volleyball teams made nine appearances at the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament. She continues to contribute to Texas Wesleyan, the volleyball program, and volleyball communities on a national level.
