FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team played under the lights at Martin Field for the first time ever on Friday. The Rams (5-3, 1-0 RRAC) took a 2-1 win over Texas College (2-5-2, 0-1) in their conference opener.
Texas Wesleyan’s Leo Cubrilo netted his third goal of the season in the 28th minute. Strong defense and outstanding goalkeeping from Toby Rochau made that goal stand up for a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the 58th minute, the Steers’ Roberto Galvan gathered a rebound in front of the goal and got one past Rochau to knot the game at one.
Ten minutes later, Chase Richeson collected a rebound off a throw in from Ekene Onuoha and netted the eventual game-winning goal.
Rochau finished with eight saves, while his counterpart, Steve Martinez, had five.
“This was a remarkably well played game from both sides,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “It was good to come out on the winning side of this one and get that first conference win.”
The Rams return to action on Sunday, when they host the University of St. Thomas-Houston at Martin Field. That game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
