FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (5-3-1) played the University of St. Thomas Houston (4-2-1) to a scoreless draw after two overtime periods at Martin Field on Sunday night.
The Rams had numerous scoring opportunities, particularly in the first half when they out shot St. Thomas 10-5; however neither team could finish at the net.
The game was hotly contested throughout. After no cautions in the first half, nine cards were handed out in the following 65 minutes including seven for St. Thomas. In the 88th minute St. Thomas’ Omar Alonso was given a red card for a spikes high tackle. However, the Rams could not convert their man-up advantage into a goal over the next 22 minutes.
For the game, Texas Wesleyan out shot St. Thomas 25-21. Both teams had nine shots on goal. Toby Rochau turned in nine saves, including several spectacular stops, for the Rams while his counterpart, Lukas Simon, did the same.
The Rams return to action on Saturday, September 29, when they host UT-Brownsville. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start and will be preceded by a women’s game. Both the men and women’s matches feature the top two teams in the Red River Athletic Conference standings.
