SAN ANTONIO, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s golf team played through difficult elements to claim the program’s 185th win (third this season) on Tuesday. The Rams won the Rattler Invitational hosted by St. Mary’s University at Pecan Valley Golf Club by eleven strokes.
After a first round of 303, the Rams scored a 291 to take the tournament at +26 594. Central Oklahoma University finished second at 605 (306, 299). Texas Wesleyan trailed Northeastern University by five shots after the first round, but Northeastern’s second round of 309 put them in third place at 607 overall.
Mitch Hendon just missed his third win of the season. Central Oklahoma’s Colby Shrum shot 72, 70-142 to take the individual title. Hendon shot 73, 70-143 just one shot off the pace.
Armando Villarreal shot an outstanding 68 on Tuesday to finish third at 144. Kevin Doskocil shot 79, 75-154 to finish tied for 26th. Paco Saracho tied for 29th at 155. Drew Koonce shot 159 to finish tied for 47th.
Head coach Kevin Millikan said that the weather turned from a very chilly morning to a warm and windy afternoon. “This is a very difficult golf course under very difficult conditions,” Millikan commented. “Our guys handled it better than everybody else today.” On the Rams’ performance this season Millikan added, “this has been a lot of fun to watch.”
The Rams return to action October 29-30, in their final tournament of the fall semester. They will take part in the Sleep Inn & Suites Classic at Coffee Creek Golf Course in Edmond, OK.
