FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (8-7-3) came up just short in a semifinal contest of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament against UT-Brownsville (12-6) on Friday. The Scorpions topped the Lady Rams by a score of 2-0.
The Lady Rams managed just one shot in the first half as UT-Brownsville controlled the ball well. Olyvia Gaytan gave UTB a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute and that score held at halftime.
In the second half, Lorinda Gomez found the net in the 63rd minute to put the Scorpions up 2-0 and seal the game.
With the loss, Texas Wesleyan’s season is likely over. The two-time defending champions finished the year with a record of 8-7-3 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play.
“Brownsville just beat us,” said head coach Josh Gibbs. “They played better than us today. With a good team like that you have to be ready to play and we didn’t have it today.”
Gibbs went on to talk about his seniors, Allie Heafner, Sarah Wilson, Loren Clark, and Aubrey Rice. “Our seniors are never going to look back and wonder if they left anything on the field today. They played hard like they always have. We will miss them. We will get new players, but we can’t replace them.”
UT-Brownsville advanced to tomorrow’s final where they will meet Bacone College who defeated Northwood 2-1. That championship game is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start at Martin Field.
