FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 59-49 win over John Brown University (1-1) on Monday.
The Rams maintained a steady lead throughout the contest. John Brown cut the score to 18-16 with 5:20 on the clock in the first half, but the Lady Rams went on an 11-2 run to take control of the contest. Texas Wesleyan shot 43% in the first half and led 31-21 at the break.
The Lady Rams led by as many as 15 (48-33) in the second half. JBU cut the margin to 56-49 with less than two minutes to play, but that was as close as they were able to get.
Texas Wesleyan won the battle of the boards 43-36. The Rams ran the fast break well getting 16 quick points. They also scored 20 points off of 23 John Brown turnovers.
JBU shot just 36% (9-25) from the free-throw line, while Texas Wesleyan shot 67% (12-18).
Moneke Smallwood led the offense with 16 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Kim Gatlin finished with 14 points.
Texas Wesleyan will return to the court on Thursday, when they host Wayland Baptist University at 5:30 p.m. |
