FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (2-1) came up on the short end of a 67-65 score at the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday. The Lady Rams erased a 10-point second half deficit only to see Wayland Baptist University (2-1) come away with the two-point win.
The first half saw eight ties, and neither team enjoyed a lead larger than six points. Back-to-back threes from Kim Gatlin gave the Lady Rams a 38-34 lead, but Wayland Baptist’s Megan Coats closed the period with a pair of free throws to make it a two-point contest (38-36) at the break.
In the second half, the Flying Queens scored eleven unanswered points in a four-minute span to take a 55-45 advantage with 10:12 to play. Gatlin then contributed five points to an 8-0 run for the Lady Rams to close to within two.
With 4:22 on the clock Brittany Turner tied the game at 59 with a tip-in. With 31 seconds to play the score remained knotted at 63, and the Rams took the ball up the floor with a chance to take the lead.
After a Texas Wesleyan miss, Anastasia Okolo scored on a layup and completed the three-point play to give the Queens a 66-63 lead with 13 seconds to go. The Rams took the ball up the floor quickly and got a layup from Turner to close to within a point. On the ensuing possession, Megan Coats left the door open by hitting just one of two with 5.1 showing on the clock. Texas Wesleyan got one final shot, but Britannia Champion’s buzzer beater just missed its mark and the Queens escaped with the 67-65 win.
The Queens out shot the Rams 45% - 37%, but Texas Wesleyan held the rebounding advantage 40-37. The Rams also scored 25 points off of 25 Wayland Baptist turnovers.
Brittany Turner turned in a double-double for Texas Wesleyan with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Gatlin led all scorers with 17 points. Wayland Baptist was led by Vanita Wright’s 14 points and 10 rebounds while Katie Benton scored 15 for the Queens.
The Lady Rams will return to action Friday, November 16, when they travel to Little Rock, AR, to take part in the Philander Smith Classic. |
