LITTLE ROCK, AR: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (3-1) took a 58-51 win over the Williams Baptist College Lady Eagles at Philander Smith College’s “Geese” Ausbie Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday.
In the first half the Lady Rams were on their way to an early blowout, but they allowed Williams Baptist to stay relatively close by sending the Eagles to the free throw line. Texas Wesleyan held the Eagles to just 19% shooting (5-of-26) from the floor while shooting 46% (15-of-33) themselves. However, 85% shooting (11-of-13) at the charity stripe kept the Eagles within striking distance, 35-23, at the break.
In first five minutes of the second half the Rams jumped out to their largest lead of the game at 44-26. The margin was at 16-points, 53-37, with 7:32 remaining in the game.
The Eagles began to chip away at that point and whittled the Rams’ lead to single digits, 54-46, with 1:41 on the clock. With twelve seconds remaining WBC’s Kelsey Smith drained a three to pull her team to within five at 56-51. The Eagles then fouled with five seconds to play. Texas Wesleyan missed both free throws, but Brittany Turner came up with a huge offensive board and scored to bring the final score to 58-51.
Turner recorded her second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Kim Gatlin led the Rams with 15 points. Andria Mitchell had a very strong game with nine points and eight rebounds in just 15 minutes off the bench.
The Lady Rams will continue play in the “Geese” Ausbie Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday, when they take on Philander Smith College at 4:00 p.m.
