WOLFPACK BITES LADY RAMS

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (4-2) suffered a 69-59 loss to 17th ranked Loyola University of New Orleans Lady Wolfpack (2-1).

The Lady Rams took an early 7-2 lead, but the Wolfpack later used an 8-2 run to take a nine-point lead at 20-11.  A jumper from Andria Mitchell closed the gap to five points, 32-27, with three minutes remaining in the period, but Loyola scored the next five points and led 37-28 at the break.

After hitting five three’s in the first half, Texas Wesleyan held Loyola scoreless from beyond the arc in the second half.

Amazingly, in a game in which the foul discrepancy was 25-13, and the opposition was allowed 34 free throw attempts, the Lady Rams held the Wolfpack to a single-digit lead through much of the second half.  Loyola shot just 59% from the free throw line and still out scored Texas Wesleyan, who shot 78%, 20-9 from the stripe.

Moneke Smallwood led the Rams with 13 points while Brittany Davenport added 11.  Trenese Smith led four members of the Wolfpack in double-figures with 19 points.

Wednesday’s game marked the start of one of the toughest stretches in the Lady Rams schedule.  In six days they play four contests including two against ranked opponents.  They will return to action on Friday, when they face #12 Oklahoma City.  That game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off in Oklahoma City, OK.
