OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (4-3) fell 73-66 to the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (3-2) at Oklahoma City University’s Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday.
Things started extremely well for the Lady Rams as they shot a blazing 55% (16-of-29) from the field while hitting 4-of-9 threes in the first half. Texas Wesleyan jumped ahead 14-2 in the first five minutes and led by as many as 13 (26-13) before the Drovers got started.
USAO used an 11-4 run to close to within six, but the Rams still held a 40-31 lead at the end of the period.
In the second half, the tables turned. After a free throw from Brittany Turner to start the frame, USAO held the Lady Rams scoreless for the next six minutes and took a 47-41 advantage.
Britannia Champion later gave the Rams a 49-47 lead, but USAO responded with 10 unanswered points and maintained a steady lead on their way to the 73-66 win.
In a rare occurrence for Texas Wesleyan, USAO dominated the paint. The Drovers out scored the Lady Rams 36-22 in the paint while holding a 47-20 rebounding advantage.
Four Lady Rams reached double-figures in scoring. Kim Gatlin was a perfect 4-for-4 from long range while pouring in 15 points. Moneke Smallwood also finished with 15, while Champion scored 11 and Brittany Davenport had 10 points.
The Lady Rams will face 12th ranked Oklahoma City tomorrow night. That contest is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start.
