LADY RAMS BACK IN WIN COLUMN

November 26, 2007

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (5-4) ended a three-game skid by defeating St. Gregory’s University (2-5) 80-65 in the Sid Richardson Center on Monday.

In the first half, full court pressure on both sides turned the game into a track meet.  The Lady Rams led 5-0 before St. Gregory’s took a shot and 7-0 before Mandy Tackett drained a three for the Cavalier’s first bucket.  That lead ballooned to 15 at 25-10, but St. Gregory’s later used an 11-2 run to cut the margin to five points at 33-28.

Texas Wesleyan’s lead remained five points, 44-39, in the second half when Brittany Turner and Britannia Champion took over the game scoring nine points in an 11-0 run.  From there the lead grew to as many as 21, 70-49, and remained in double figures as Texas Wesleyan cruised to the 80-65 win.

Texas Wesleyan shot 46% from the floor in the game including 51% in the second half.  Defensively they held the Cavaliers to 29% from the floor and won the battle-of-the-boards 52-33.  The Lady Rams also out scored the Cavaliers 18-7 on the fast break.

Brittany Turner had a monster game with 22 points and 16 rebounds.  Turner did most of her damage in the second half when she posted 16 points and 10 boards.  Champion also posted a career-high 20 points for Texas Wesleyan.  St. Gregory’s was led by Tackett’s 14 points.

The Lady Rams return to the court on Tuesday, December 4, when they host LSU-Shreveport.  That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in the Sid Richardson Center.
