MUSKOGEE, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (7-4, 1-0 RRAC) took a 66-58 win over Bacone College (2-5, 0-1) in their first Red River Athletic Conference contest of the season.
The first half was all Lady Rams as Texas Wesleyan jumped ahead 15-5. They then used a 13-4 run to take their largest lead of the period at 28-9 with just under six minutes to play.
The Lady Rams led 36-25 at the break thanks largely to Britannia Champion. Champion came off the bench and dumped in 17 first half points on 6-of-9 shooting including a perfect 3-for-3 from long range.
The second half was a different story. The Warriors opened the period with a 10-3 run to close the gap to four points at 39-35. Bacone later tied the game at 58, but Andria Mitchell scored on the Lady Rams’ next possession and Kim Gatlin added a pair of free throws to give Texas Wesleyan a 62-58 lead with 2:38 to play.
For the game, the Lady Rams out shot the Warriors 42%-38% and dominated the boards 51-29.
After a terrific first half, Champion was held scoreless in the second, finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Mitchell posted eight points and 10 boards. Brittany Davenport was solid as well with eight points and six assists. Bacone was led by Nichole Brazelton who scored all 18 of her points in the second half.
The Lady Rams will return to action on Monday, December 17, when they travel to Moore, OK, to take on Hillsdale Free Will Baptist. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
