FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s golf team has been selected to receive a $5,000 grant from the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial and Colonial Country Club Charities. The Rams have also moved up to 5th in the latest NAIA National Poll.
Texas Wesleyan Golf has been a past recipient of this award, which funds the team’s Colonial Golf Scholarship Endowment.
“We are extremely honored to receive such an award,” head coach Kevin Millikan said. “The Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial and Colonial Country Club Charities have been long-time supporters of Wesleyan golf. Because of their help, deserving student-athletes are able to achieve their academic goals.”
Texas Wesleyan has enjoyed one of their most successful starts in recent memory. The Rams took three wins in five tournaments this fall. They also earned a third and a tenth place finish. Things were looking good even before the season started as the Rams won the Fort Worth City Championship behind the play of Paco Saracho and Mitch Hendon who finished first and second respectively. The Rams will now regroup until next semester when they will begin their march toward the 57th Annual NAIA National Tournament.
The Rams compete in the NAIA’s Region VI which was well represented in the national poll, placing three teams in the top-five and four in the top-ten.
Texas Wesleyan golf is one of the most vaunted programs in NAIA sports. The Rams have made 46 appearances in the tournament in 53 years of NAIA membership. In the national tournament, they have finished outside of the top-ten on just three occasions. Texas Wesleyan boasts more individual champions, nine, than any other school. As a team, they also share the record of six titles with Oklahoma City University and Huntingdon College. In addition to their six titles, they have posted eight runner-up finishes and 33 top-five’s.
