RAMS TAKE 2-1 WIN IN DOUBLE OT
August 28, 2009

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (1-0) used a pair of goals from sophomore forward Marcus Harris to took a 2-1 win in two overtimes against Wayland Baptist University (0-2) at Martin Field on Friday.

Harris got things started quickly when he headed in a feed from Ekene Onuoha just 1:41 into the contest.

A Texas Wesleyan foul in the box led to a penalty kick by Wayland’s Bright Atoe to tie the game in the 22nd minute.

After 90 minutes the game remained deadlocked at one.  The Rams hit the post in the 98th minute and again in the 104th minute before Harris finally found the net in the 105th minute.

The two teams were even with seven shots on goal.  Texas Wesleyan controlled the ball for 12 corner kicks to Wayland’s two.  The Pioneers were whistled for 20 fouls to Texas Wesleyan’s, while the Rams were called offside 16 times.

Joakim Soderbaum handled all 105 minutes in the net for Texas Wesleyan and made six saves.  Wayland Baptist’s Prashay Deo made five stops, allowing one goal in 59 minutes of work.

“I thought we were the better team most of the day,” said head coach Josh Gibbs.  “The refereeing and the physical play aside, we just did not finish very well.  You have to score goals to win, and we left some opportunities out there today.”

Texas Wesleyan will return to action on Sunday, when they host Ouachita Baptist at 3:00 p.m.
