FORT WORTH, TX: The 22nd ranked Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (1-0) took a 3-0 season-opening win over Wayland Baptist University (1-1) at Martin Field on Friday.
Senior captain, Jaimie Romaguera got the scoring started off an assist from Kayla Doherty in the 21st minute. The Lady Rams outshot the 16-4 in the first period, but went to halftime with a slim 1-0 advantage.
Doherty made it 2-0 in the 50th minute on an assist from Jessica Watton and eight minutes later Vanessa Lopez put the game out of reach with her first collegiate goal, a header off of a corner kick from Sam Greer.
“I was a little disappointed with our finishing,” said head coach Josh Gibbs, “but I thought we really came together in the second half. I was also really impressed with our freshmen today.”
For the game Texas Wesleyan outshot Wayland Baptist 25-6. Sophomore goalkeeper Katy Houchin made three saves to earn the shutout in her first career start in the net. Her counterpart, Kylie Middleton, made six saves for the Pioneers.
The Lady Rams will return to action on Sunday, when they host Ouachita Baptist University at Martin Field. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start. |
