BROWNSVILLE, TX: In a rematch of the 2007 Red River Athletic Conference championship game, the Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (4-4-2, 1-2 RRAC) suffered a 2-0 loss at UT-Brownsville (7-4, 3-0) on Wednesday.
The Rams played a man down for the final 73 minutes after Rafael Franco was tagged with a red card in the in 17th minute.
The Scorpions scored a pair of early goals. Darren O’Connor scored in the 7th minute and Dave Purser followed with a goal in the 10th minute off assists from Jose Galvan and Fernando Mendoza.
UT-Brownsville held a slim 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Joakim Soderbaum made seven saves for the Rams while his counterpart, Juan Gamboa made six stops for the Scorpions.
“We lost our heads a little early on today,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “Brownsville is just too good a team to focus on anything other than them. They outplayed us today and deserved to win the game.”
The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they host Southwestern Assemblies of God University in RRAC action. That contest is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start at Martin Field. |
