RAMS SUFFER 4-0 LOSS
October 18, 2008

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (6-5-2, 3-3 RRAC) suffered a 4-0 loss against Huston-Tillotson University (9-5-1, 4-1) at Martin Field on Saturday.

Prior to the game the Rams honored their lone senior.  Christian Villasenor has put together perhaps the best individual career in Texas Wesleyan men’s soccer history.  The midfielder holds school records with 25 goals and 52 points in his freshman season (earning All-American status) and 44 goals and 95 points in his career.

What might have been a competitive game was marred by 47 fouls and an astounding 12 cards (nine against Huston-Tillotson and three against Texas Wesleyan).  Huston-Tillotson took a 2-0 lead at the half with goals coming from Varney Saidu in the 26th minute and Walter Madrid in the 39th minute.

Madrid made it 3-0 with a goal in the 62nd minute.  Five minutes later the game had to be halted for approximately ten minutes while the official sorted out an altercation that resulted in two ejections.

Josh Reyes scored Huston-Tillotson’s fourth goal in the 77th minute.  Gabe Gibbons made five saves in a shutout effort in goal.  Texas Wesleyan’s Joakim Soderbaum made six saves for the Rams.

“The two early goals really hurt us,” said head coach Josh Gibbs.  “They looked like they wanted it more than us today.  This is usually a very competitive game, and I was disappointed that the referee let it get out of hand.”

The Rams will return to action on Saturday, October 25, in their final conference match of the year.  They will take on the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, NM, at 1:00 p.m.
