FORT WORTH, TX: The fourth seeded Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (8-5-2) advanced to the Red River Athletic Conference semifinals with a 3-1 win over Northwood University (8-10) at Martin Field on Thursday.
Northwood got on the scoreboard first when Dustin Hollier scored in the 21st minute; however, Charlie Torres scored the equalizer off an assist from Leo Cubrilo just 24 seconds later.
In the 32nd minute Kevin Rauch played a cross to the back post and Cubrilo put the Rams ahead 2-1. The Rams got an insurance goal in the 56th minute when Christian Villasenor scored on an assist from Marcus Harris.
Northwood edged Texas Wesleyan in shots on goal, 9-7, but the Rams controlled the ball well. Texas Wesleyan took seven corner kicks while allowing just two.
Joakim Soderbaum made eight saves in the win, while his counterpart, Michael Crawford, had four saves.
“I was a little concerned with slow start, but we came around and dominated play,” said head coach Josh Gibbs. “We were really dangerous and now we set up a meeting with UT-Brownsville.”
With the win, the Rams advance to face top-seeded UT-Brownsville in Friday’s semifinal. That match is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start. Texas College and Huston-Tillotson University will play the other semifinal at 12:00 p.m. |
