LADY RAMS ADVANCE TO FINAL:

McKERNON TIES RECORD
November 7, 2008

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (10-6) took a 4-0 win over Texas College (7-11-1) in Red River Athletic Conference semifinal action at Martin Field on Friday.  With the win, the Lady Rams advance to Saturday’s final where they will meet Northwood University (13-4-1) at 7:30 p.m.

Senior midfielder Brianna McKernon worked her way into the Texas Wesleyan record book with a goal and an assist in the match.  That assist marked the 22nd of McKernon’s career, tying the Texas Wesleyan school record.

The Rams started slowly and led 1-0 at the half thanks to a goal from Diana Lopez on an assist from Christina Zimmerman.

Jaimie Romaguera jump started the Texas Wesleyan offense in the second half.  McKernon found Romaguera in the 58th minute.  Zimmerman then fed Romaguera for a second goal in the 64th minute.  McKernon added the Rams’ fourth goal off an assist from Alejandra Barrera in the 76th minute.

The Rams controlled play throughout the second half, allowing the Steers just one shot in the period and four in the game.

“We were up 1-0 at the half, but I was not happy with the effort,” said head coach Josh Gibbs.  “We started playing good soccer like we needed to in the second half.”

Gibbs went on to congratulate McKernon, “She has earned that record with a lot of hard work.  She is the player every coach wants to coach.

The Lady Rams will take on Northwood in Saturday’s championship match.  Northwood advanced with a 2-1 win over UT-Brownsville on Friday.
