LADY RAMS IMPRESS ON SENIOR DAY
November 7, 2009

 

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (16-16, 10-6 RRAC) split a pair of matches on Saturday. The Lady Rams took a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-17) loss to ninth ranked UT-Brownsville, before dominating Our Lady of the Lake University 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-10)

 

Wesleyan honored the Lady Ram parents who put so much support and dedication into the volleyball program. The Lady Ram parents were welcomed on the court and were announced with their daughters as the lineups were announced.

 

The Lady Rams took on the ninth ranked University of Texas at Brownsville in the early game and took a hard fought 3-0 loss by scores of. The Lady Rams were solid through most but couldn’t keep up with the consistency of the Lady Scorpions.

 

Chelsy Covington led the Lady Rams with eight kills in the match. She also had six digs. Destiny Clemons had seven kills, with one assists and two blocks in the contest. Evoni Darling led the Rams with 15 assists and four digs in the loss. Kristin Venhuizen picked up 10 digs in the match.

 

Arlene Ferreira led the Lady Scorpions with 15 kills and 16 digs. Daianarah Bracero led the Lady Scorpions with 41 assists.

 

The Lady Rams celebrated senior day before the match against the Lady Saints honoring three seniors for their hard work and dedication to the volleyball program. The Lady Rams honored were Lauren Hinojos, a defensive specialist out of Midland, TX, Kristina Harris, a defensive specialist from Cleburne, TX, and Destiny Clemons, a middle blocker out of Grand Prairie, TX.

Hinojos has tallied 260 digs in her two year career and currently ranks fourth on the team with 154 digs. Her career high was 19 digs against Oklahoma Baptist last season. Harris has earned 258 digs in her two year career at Wesleyan, and currently ranked third on the team with 225 digs this season. She ranks sixth on the team with 14 service aces this season and has been named RRAC Libero of the week twice this season. Clemons has amassed 816 kills, 193 total blocks, 252 digs, and 128 aces in her four years at Wesleyan, and helped win a conference championship in 2005. She leads the team this season with 316 kills, and 74 blocks. The seniors have helped Wesleyan win 85 games through their careers and will be dearly missed.

 

The Lady Rams simply dominated the Lady Saints in their second match of the day in what was easily their best game of the year. The Lady Rams took control of the match from the first serve, never gave up the lead in the third set. The Lady Rams only gave up eight attacking errors against the Lady Saints 24 error. Wesleyan hit .353 percent in the match versus the Lady Saints -.08.

 

Clemons led all players with 15 kills with a .636 hitting percentage. She also earned a career high seven total blocks in the win. Angelica Arroyo led all players with 17 assists in the contest. Evoni Darling also added 14 assists in the match.

 

With the win the Lady Rams move from fifth in the conference into a three way tie for third heading into the conference tournament hosted by Texas Wesleyan University next Thursday through Saturday November 12-14. Tournament seeding is to be determined, but should be determined by Sunday.
