- Teaching Contemporary Biology Course Application:
Texas Wesleyan University Teacher Quality - Graduate Course Opportunity Teaching Ecological Concepts I and II Texas Wesleyan University has been awarded grant support from the Higher Education Coordinating Board to offer two Graduate level ecology courses. Texas Wesleyan University is currently accepting applications to enroll in these Graduate Courses to expand the knowledge and skills of classroom teachers. A total of twenty teachers may participate. If interested, please complete the attached application form and return it at your earliest convenience. Space is limited so enroll early. Content: The Graduate Courses will last one year and focus on Ecology and Conservation Biology. Emphasis: The Graduate Courses will focus on building content knowledge and effective teaching strategies. Each teacher will receive classroom teaching materials based on the knowledge and skills developed. This is an infused approach for teaching and integrated curriculum. Level: These Graduate Courses assume no previous university level preparation in science. The content focuses on concepts that underlie timely societal concerns which make their way into the local and national media. It provides curricular material that is appropriate for Middle and High School classrooms and is interesting to Elementary School Teachers as well. Credit: The Graduate Courses offer a total of 6 credits of graduate level credit in natural science which can be applied toward a Master’s Degree in Education. Continuing Education Credit is also available. Cost: Tuition is free. All expenses are covered by the grant support. Teaching materials for labs are provided. Stipend: The grant provides a $300 summer stipend and provides travel and per diem support. Participation in and successful completion of this program by Fort Worth ISD personnel qualifies them for a $2000 stipend offered by the FWISD. Dates: The Graduate Courses are offered Monday-Thursday June 16 – July 3, 2008 from 12:30-4:30. The course will meet on alternative Saturdays, seven times during the Fall of 2008. It will begin September 5, 2008. The course will resume January 24, 2009 and will meet every other Saturday until May 2, 2009. Three teachers will have the opportunity to travel to the Mexico between Christmas and New Years to visit the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. Deadline: June 16th but enrollment is limited to twenty.
