REPORT OF PROGRESS
UCAIR PHASE II-1998

R. G. Landolt
Texas Wesleyan University

Since 1990, the costs of hard copy subscriptions of library periodicals for Chemistry and Physics have more than doubled. Further, cost of Chemical Abstracts (CA) specifically has increased to the point that approximately 3/4 of undergraduate institutions in Texas have been unable to maintain print subscriptions to this important resource.

Electronic access to Chemical Abstracts is no longer an option but a sheer necessity. Such access financially is possible, due to substantial savings (80-90% relative to industrial costs) provided by through the Academic Discount policy by STN International, the marketing arm of Chemical Abstracts. However, levels of use at undergraduate schools have been quite low for two reasons: Faculty were not oriented to techniques involved, and uses were viewed as "add-ons" rather than integral to curricular programming.
