SIXTEENTH ANNUAL ACADEMIC CONVOCATION TO BE HELD TUESDAY, SEPT. 9 Texas Wesleyan's sixteenth annual Academic Convocation will be held at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, in Polytechnic United Methodist Church. Texas Wesleyan Trustee Janie Faris, BMEd ’77, MAEd ’83, will be the keynote speaker. Faris has worked in education since 1977, beginning as a classroom music teacher with the Azle Independent School District in a career that spanned K – 12 instruction and administration. After serving for 11 years as principal of Heritage Elementary School in Keller ISD, and 31 total years in public education, Faris retired in December 2007. She was named in Who’s Who in American Education in 1990, and was named Fort Worth Classroom Teacher Association Outstanding Young Educator in 1989.
Faris met her husband Evan, BMEd '76, while they were undergraduates at Texas Wesleyan, and they have been actively involved with the school ever since. Faris served as president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors from 1998 to 2000. She was recognized for her leadership by being asked to serve on the search committees for the University President and the Provost and has served on the Board of Trustees since 2005. Faris teaches Instructional Leadership in the Texas Wesleyan Principal Certification program. The Academic Convocation for Texas Wesleyan is held at the beginning of each school year as an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to gather and reflect on the nature of their mission for the year – to receive, provide, and support a comprehensive higher education. The faculty wears academic regalia (robes and hoods) to honor the occasion. For more information on the event, contact Lynette Morones at (817) 531-4401 or email her here.
