WESLEYAN STUDENTS SELECTED TO ATTEND ETHICS CONFERENCE AT WEST POINT
Two Texas Wesleyan students will attend the National Conference on Ethics in America, hosted by the United States Military Academy at West Point. Juniors Justin Payne, political science major, and Michael Smith, English major, will represent Texas Wesleyan at this annual event Oct. 19-23. This is the first year that Texas Wesleyan has been invited to participate; over 150 students representing more than 60 academic institutions around the country take part in the conference each year. During the conference, student delegates will work with mentors from a variety of backgrounds to discuss moral and ethical challenges in everyday life. The goal is to challenge the delegates to think critically about relevant topics and to facilitate a dialogue that will allow delegates to build upon their ideas at their home colleges and universities. The theme of this year’s conference is “Serving Our Nation with Integrity.” The keynote speaker is Dave Heineman, governor of Nebraska and 1970 graduate of West Point. Plenary sessions will focus on “Integrity through Sport”, “Integrity in Enterprise”, “Social Responsibility”, and “Citizenship and Character.” Both Payne and Smith are members of the Texas Wesleyan Intercollegiate Ethics team and the Business Ethics team, and are participants in the M.D. Anderson Pre-Professional Program. Payne is also a member of the Texas Wesleyan mediation team, Phi Alpha Delta, and the Student Government Association.
