TEXAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY HOSTING THE MODEL ARAB LEAGUE’S SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE APRIL 12-14 Howard Payne University, Baylor University, University of North Texas and the United States Military Academy at West Point are among the schools competing against Texas Wesleyan University during the Model Arab League's Southwest Conference, which will be held April 12-14 at Texas Wesleyan. University teams, representing a specific country, will spend three days competing through role playing. For example, Texas Wesleyan will be Lebanon in the event, which operates like a mini United Nations. Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, Morocco, Palestine and Sudan are among the countries represented by other schools. The Model Arab League has five committees: Joint Defense Council, Council on Palestinian Affairs, Council of Arab Social Affairs Ministers, Council on Political Affairs, and Council of Arab Environmental Affairs Ministers. During the event, students will work on real-world issues that diplomats face every day. Other participants include University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Oklahoma Baptist University, Oklahoma Christian University, Regis University, University of Missouri – Kansas City, Midwestern State University and Missouri Southern State University. The Model Arab League is a debate organization founded by the National Center of U.S.-Arab Relations for college students, who learn about the concerns of the Arab states. As many as 300 students are expected to be on campus for the conference. For more information, call Ayah Sayyed, secretary general for the conference, at (817) 807-8358. |
