FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

POLYTECHNIC CEMETERY TO RECEIVE SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Join the Texas Historical Commission (THC), Tarrant County Historical Commission, Texas Wesleyan University representatives, Tarrant County and Fort Worth officials to celebrate the designation of Polytechnic Cemetery is the 1000th Historic Texas Cemetery. Descendants of those buried in the cemetery, which dates back to 1895, will be on hand to participate in this special tribute.

Polytechnic Cemetery in Fort Worth will be recognized for this honor by receiving its official Historic Texas Cemetery designation during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 5. Polytechnic Cemetery is located at 1000 Bishop St., between Aves. B and C. A reception with light refreshments will follow in the Louella Baker Martin Pavilion, located at 1112 Wesleyan St.

The Texas Wesleyan University history faculty members and students began researching the Polytechnic Cemetery in 1997. In 2002, with help from Mae Bruce and her family, and under the instruction of Dr. John Matthews, students mapped the cemetery.

The THC is dedicated to helping volunteers preserve historic cemeteries throughout Texas. The THC developed the Historic Texas Cemetery designation to address the destruction and illegal removal of historic cemeteries. Volunteers are encouraged to undertake efforts which include researching, surveying and applying for the Historic Texas Cemetery designation. Visit the THC's web site for more information.
