Luncheon and Open House Wednesday, Jan. 30
Members of area Kiwanis Clubs will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in Lou's Pavilion about the possibility of forming a Kiwanis Club on our campus.
Their presentation will provide information on ways Kiwanis can assist Texas Wesleyan in fulfilling our mission to serve our community in a more effective way.
Please keep these few points in mind for the open house:
- Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers committed to changing the world one child and one community at a time. The Kiwanis motto is: serving the children of the world. Please visit www.kiwanis.org to learn more.
- The ten Kiwanis Clubs in the area surrounding Fort Worth are committed to helping us form a Texas Wesleyan Kiwanis Club that will provide faculty, staff, and alumni a quality opportunity to serve our community and its youth.
- A Texas Wesleyan Kiwanis Club will provide leadership development opportunities to students from Texas Wesleyan as well as the surrounding community and local schools. Additionally, it will provide mentoring and scholarship opportunities for local youth.
- While we already have a good reputation within this community, many local residents have not received the message. This program will communicate that message. If you can give your time to this program, you can help save the life of a child in this community.
If you have further questions about Kiwanis and Texas Wesleyan, call Jesse Sowell at 817-531-4914.

As we organize and initiate our Learning Communities for the freshman class of 2008, we will be providing a significant level of professional development for faculty and staff. We will learn more about the developmental and managerial issues associated with this initiative and related effects as well as curricular and pedagogical issues. Bringing faculty and students together into cohesive learning groups sharing academic goals and experiences, integrated closely with curriculum and support services, can then impact improved socialization and retention. With a focus on learning outcomes, Learning Communities will foster a highly integrated teaching and learning experience for both at-risk and mainstream students. Additionally, there will be a major focus on the use of technology professionally and pedagogically. Look for workshops and more already being announced.

Music Department Awarded Grant from Arts Council of Fort Worth and Tarrant County
Congratulations to Bryan English, assistant professor of music, and the Music Department on their recent Mini Grant award from the Arts Council of Fort Worth & Tarrant County.
English's proposal received a grant in the amount of $2,000 to provide partial funding in support of the Highlander/Wesleyan Jazz Festival. This program brings talented musicians, performers and renowned artists to students and faculty within the Fort Worth ISD and other surrounding districts, as well as providing outstanding performances for the neighboring communities and the general public. Not only does the event expose the
surrounding communities to our outstanding fine arts program, it also provides opportunities for the participating students in various musical clinics, activities, and performances.
This year the Highlander/Wesleyan Jazz Festival will take place Saturday, May 10, at Tarrant County College's South Campus and here on the Wesleyan campus in Martin Hall. The featured guest artists this year are Chris Brubeck and his band, The Brubeck Brothers Quartet. Chris is the son of jazz legend Dave Brubeck, and he is a sought-after composer and performer worldwide. He is considered the George Gershwin of the 21st century and Wesleyan is fortunate to have him appear at the event. For more information, please contact Bryan English at benglish@txwes.edu.

Floorball at Texas Wesleyan
A young sport with roots in Sweden, floorball will now be available at Texas Wesleyan. Try to imagine a more gentle version of field hockey, played in a gymnasium. The game is quick, easy to learn, and started out as a social game in the backyards of Sweden. Now it has grown to become the second most popular sport in Sweden (after soccer), and is spreading all over the world. Two students, Joakim Soederbaum and Ryan Authier, decided to bring the game to Texas Wesleyan, with a start on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m., when an introductory session will be held in the Sid Richardson gym. All equipment will be provided - all you need to bring is indoor shoes and plenty of energy. Don’t miss the chance to check out the fastest growing sport on earth! For more information, visit www.twfloorball.com.
