Reed to Receive Replacement Olympic Bronze Medal, Table Tennis Team to Receive Championship Rings

Photo of Jasna ReedJasna Reed, head coach and table tennis star, will be presented with an Olympic medal at about 4:30 Saturday, Oct. 24, during the Texas Wesleyan Open Tournament in the Sid W. Richardson Gym.

Dr. Harold Jeffcoat will present the medal to Reed – a replacement for the bronze medal she won in 1988 in Seoul. He will also present the 2008-2009 national championship rings to the table tennis team. Texas Wesleyan University has won national awards every year since 2002. The program has garnered 38 out of 52 possible honors during their eight years. Reed was on the first Wesleyan team in 2002.

Reed was born in Bosnia and played in the Olympics for Yugoslavia in 1988 and again in 1992. She became a United States citizen in 1999. In 2000 and 2004, she played in the Olympics representing the USA.

After she won in 1988, Reed continued playing table tennis around the world, leaving her medal with relatives back home. Unfortunately, the medal was misplaced during the Bosnian War and was never recovered.

The tournament runs all day Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Official Dedication of the Texas Historical Marker for Polytechnic Cemetery

Gravestones of D. McRae and his wifeAll members of the Wesleyan community are invited to the official dedication of the Texas Historical Marker for Polytechnic Cemetery at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21. Because of the rain, the event will be held at Lou's Place, with a reception to follow.

In March of last year, we helped celebrate as Poly Cemetery received the 100th Historic Texas Cemetery designation. The official marker will now be unveiled at the historic cemetery that borders Wesleyan’s campus.

Tarrant County Court officials and representatives of the Tarrant County Historical Commission, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Daughters of the Republic of Texas, as well as descendents, will join in the ceremony.

Wesleyan to Host “Celebrating the Spirit of Poly”

Poly ParrotWhen Polytechnic High School achieved its remarkable TAKS Test turnaround earlier this summer, Senator Wendy Davis began planning a community celebration. On Saturday, Oct. 31, Davis will host an event that begins with a parade at Poly High School and proceeds to our campus. Since Wesleyan is a strong supporter of Poly, it is only fitting that we set the stage to celebrate the success of Poly students, parents, and administrators.

President Harold Jeffcoat will participate in the parade, which begins at 10 a.m. and will proceed down Rosedale to the quad. Davis, Jeffcoat, and a number of elected officials and community leaders will address the crowd. The event will culminate in activities and games for the whole family until 1 p.m. Wesleyan students, faculty, and staff will help as volunteers during the event. If you’d like to volunteer, email Lynette Morones.

The celebration is open to everyone at Wesleyan … and especially Poly High alumni.

Rai's father was killed during a robbery in January while at work at at the TL Food Store on Lancaster Avenue. Rai is now a freshman at Texas Wesleyan, fulfilling his father's dream of an education with financial help from the University and Meadowbrook United Methodist Church. Click here to read the story and view the video.

Wesleyan was also in the news this week with the campus visit from Tammy Erickson of nGenera Innovative Network. The news column in the Star-Telegram cited Erickson's recent interview with Harvard Business Publishing about Generation Y in the workplace. This generation's parents, she said, "have been telling them since the day they were born that they could do anything they set their mind to....And you know what? They’re ready." Lady Rams Break Record in Win

The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (10-5) picked up an easy victory at the hands of Southwestern Adventist University in a 20-0 match that set the school record for most team goals in a single game late Saturday night.

The Lady Rams performance Saturday easily put them in the school record books as they crushed the previous record of 14 goals in a single game held by the 2003 squad. The Lady Rams barely finished play before midnight as they took it to the Lady Knights all night long, scoring at will throughout the entire game.

Jessica Watton wasted no time getting the ball in the net as she scored the first goal one minute and eight seconds into the match. Watton would score three goals all together in the victory over the Lady Knights.

The rest of the Lady Rams followed suit and scored often as Brandi Berrier scored three goals in the contest. Berrier also notched an assists in the win. Lateah Lucero found the net in the 10th minute, and Jaimie Romaguera, Kayla Doherty, Christina Zimmerman, Samantha Greer, and Jordan Carrizales all finished with one goal each. Romaguera and Carrizales both picked up an assist, while Greer notched two assists in the match.

Cara Lumpkin went three for three, scoring three goals on three shots. Lumpkin also added two assists to go along with her hat trick.

Alejandra Barrera was one goal shy of tying a school record for goals in a single game as she scored an impressive five goals, adding two assists in the 20-0 win.

No fouls were given to either team, something very rare in soccer, as the Lady Rams outshot the Lady Knights 51-0.

The Lady Rams travel to take on conference opponent University of the Southwest at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.

Alumna Gets Rave Reviews for Performance

Photo of Cristela Carrizales Wesleyan theater alumna Cristela Carrizales, BA '96, has received rave reviews for her performance as Helen in Neil LaBute's Fat Pig, produced by Ghostlight Theater in Oklahoma City. Larry Laneer of the OK Gazette wrote, "Without Carrizales’ outstanding performance, this production of “Fat Pig” would just be a discomforting case for the Golden Rule. Carrizales, one of the city’s finest actors, gives a daring, heartfelt performance that is marked by understanding and nuance. It is one of the best of the year." (Click to read the full review.)
