Opera Workshop Presents Spiral: A New Opera

Texas Wesleyan Music Department Opera Workshop will present Spiral: A New Opera at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, in Martin Hall. Admission is free. The opera includes music by Carissimi, Handel, Mechem, Menotti, Mozart, Purcell, Puccini, Vaughan Williams, Verdi and Yeston. Story and script by Texas Wesleyan Opera Workshop students Janna McKinley (lead writer), Ryan Amador, Jonah Copeland, Stephanie Darbo, David Gast, Mary-Margaret Meyer, Leticia Michael, Richelle Mitchell, Jeremy Smith and Jessica Steel. Directed by Jerry Bierschenk, visiting assistant professor of music, and Julie McCoy, associate professor of music, with piano accompianment by Lori Dunn, adjunct professor of music.

Purple Cow Day

United Way Deadline Extended
United Way logo The deadline for our United Way Campaign has been extended to Monday, Nov. 26. We have reached more than half of our goal of the estimated $10,000. You should already have received your application to donate to the United Way through campus mail; the President's Office has extra applications on hand if you did not. Thanksgiving Feast at Dora's

Clip art of a turkey Please come and join us for a Thanksgiving Feast today in Dora’s from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The menu will feature: turkey and homemade cornbread dressing, honey-glazed bone-in ham, Mrs. Ethel’s giblet gravy, roasted creamed potatoes, collard greens, candied yams, and Southern-style green beans. Lunch is just $6.25 plus tax.

Half-Price Scholastic Book Fair

The hours for the book sale will be Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Book Fair is located in the Orientation Room on the first floor of the West Library. Mandatory Sexual Harassment Awareness and Prevention Training
Wesleyan flame logoAs defined in the University's Faculty Handbook (section 5.2) & Staff Handbook (section 7.8), Texas Wesleyan University is committed to a harassment-free work and learning environment. In compliance with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 & Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972, all University employees are expected to 1). read the Unified Harassment and Discrimination Policy and 2.) review and complete online Sexual Harassment Awareness & Prevention Training before Friday, Dec. 14, 2007. Since the sexual harassment training is web-based, employees are able to complete this training at their convenience using the Internet during normal work hours. More importantly, it will ensure that faculty, staff, students and guests are not subjected to inappropriate behavior. Book Signing and Reception for First Texas Wesleyan University Press Manuscript

The collection of poems by Jeffrey DeLotto, professor of English at Texas Wesleyan, features several previously published works as well as new ones. DeLotto will sign copies of the book at a reception from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the Louella Baker Martin Pavilion. Texas Wesleyan University Press, in conjunction with Xlibris, a print-on-demand publishing house, will publish all types of manuscripts, including scholarly, creative, or community interest works. Christmas Gifts for Meals on Wheels Clients

Christmas giftThis holiday season, the West Library is once again collecting Christmas gifts for Meals on Wheels Clients. If you would like to participate:

1. Come by the library and select a name from the Christmas tree on the first floor.
2. Purchase the gift listed on the card
3. Wrap the gift (optional)
4. Attach the tag to the gift
5. Bring the wrapped gift to the Circulation Desk before Wednesday, Dec. 5.

      John Murphey, BBA '71, will deliver the commencement address. Murphey is the Executive in Residence with the School of Business Administration and Professional Programs and a member of the Board of Trustees. Click here to read more about Murphey.

Sam Taylor Fellowship Award Recipients

Congratulations to the six Texas Wesleyan faculty members who have just received Sam Taylor Fellowship awards granted through the General Board of Higher Education & Ministry of The United Methodist Church. The awards total more than $10,000. Awardees include the following faculty:

Chitra Chandrasekaran, associate professor of biology, will use the funds to defray tuition costs associated with Stanford University coursework in bioinformatics and genomics.

Mary Anne Clark, professor of biology, will use funding to support server fees and continued development of her Second Life Genome Island website.

Aileen Curtin, associate professor of education, will conduct research to examine the instructional methods used by beginning teachers in the classroom to teach English Language Learners and the relationship between English as a second language college preparation courses and actual classroom practice.

Kalpana Pai, assistant professor of economics and finance, will travel to the New York Stock Exchange and attend the Teachers' Workshop Program to obtain a thorough understanding of the working of the NYSE in order to use this information in her teaching of economics and finance at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Jesse Sowell, professor of religion, will conduct research on the role of women in early development of the Methodist movement, focusing primarily on the impact of women on the ministry of John Wesley and the early development of that movement in England.

Kimberly Webb, assistant professor of accounting, will use the award to aid in the cost of her tuition and books for her graduate study leading to a Ph.D. in Business Administration - Accounting at the University of Texas at Arlington.



Open Enrollment for Supplemental Life Insurance

Wesleyan flame logoOpen enrollment for supplemental life will be held Nov. 28 - Dec. 4, 2007.  During this time, all full-time employees are eligible to increase existing coverage or apply for coverage if the benefit was previously waived. You do not need to complete new enrollment forms to maintain current coverage amounts. Effective January 1, 2008, premiums will increase for employees moving into a new age group during calendar year 2008. Under separate cover, you will be notified if next year's premium will change.

     Employees currently enrolled in UNUM's Supplemental Life insurance have the opportunity to increase their level of coverage up to $100,000 and dependent coverage can be increased up to $25,000 without answering medical questions. Dependent children coverage can be increased up to $10,000 and no medical questions are required.  The re-enrollment effective date for this optional, after-tax benefit will be January 1, 2008. Employees who previously waived coverage will be required to complete medical questions regardless of their elected level of coverage. 

     If you are interested in increasing your coverage or considering initial enrollment in supplemental life insurance, please contact the human resources office, (817) 531-4443, to request enrollment forms. 

20 Thanksgiving Baskets Donated

CornucopiaThank you to everyone who donated food for the Thanksgiving Basket program. Items for 20 baskets, the most since Student Life began sponsoring this project four years ago, were collected. Thanks to you, 20 area families will have a Thanksgiving dinner to enjoy this week. But hunger doesn't happen only on Thanksgiving; click here to visit the Tarrant Area Food Bank.
