International Week Nov. 13-17

Globe November 13-17 is International Week at Texas Wesleyan University. International Week is a tradition that has been enjoyed at Texas Wesleyan for many years. It is a week to celebrate unity in the diversity of cultures and to enjoy some of the traditions of other countries. There are 42 international students attending Texas Wesleyan University from 28 different countries. International Week is a way of recognizing the importance of international education and our international students, and it is also a fun way of helping our campus become more aware of other nations by participating in different cultural activities. These free activities include fun activities ranging from an African drumming, dancing, and story-telling concert Monday or learning to play popular European Games Wednesday afternoon to watching the movie "Love Actually" Friday night. Interesting and more scholarly presentations on multi-cultural children’s literature Monday, Gaelic Language and Open Microphone in Spanish on Tuesday to a multi-media show on Brazil on Friday. International students will speak on Tuesday and all students can find information on Wesleyan’s Study Abroad programs on Wednesday. The most popular event of the week is always the International Fair at noon on Thursday where our international students showcase their cultures with displays and food from their countries. SOAC, SGA, Student Life, West Library, Dora Roberts Residential Restaurant, professors and staff all support this week, and we encourage all students to take advantage of the different activities that will broaden and enrich their lives. For a full schedule of events or for more information, visit http://www.txwes.edu/internationalprograms/IntlWeekEvents.htm. Call (817) 531-4965 with any questions.

"Elijah" Coming to Wesleyan

G clef Wesleyan Chorale and orchestra present Mendelssohn's oratorio "Elijah" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Polytechnic United Methodist Church. "This may be some of the most dramatic music written in the 19th century as Mendelssohn conveys in music the trials of the old testament prophet Elijah," notes Steve Simons, conductor of Wesleyan Chorale. "Faced with adversity with the prophets of Baal, Ahab and Jezebel, Elijah overcomes tremendous odds in winning the people of Israel to allegiance to the one true God".

The 60-voice Chorale will be accompanied by a 22-piece orchestra and will feature Julie McCoy and Joe Davisson, of the Texas Wesleyan music faculty, as soloists. The role of Elijah will be sung by Blake Davidson, bass-baritone from Richardson. There is no admission charge and a reception will follow.

Students and employees are now able to access e-mail and other Internet resources inside each building using a wireless-capable notebook computer.

“The completion of the Brown-Lupton/Dora Roberts wireless expansion project brings us a step closer to one of our major goals: a wireless network that can be accessed by each student and employee from anywhere on the Historic Campus,” said SW Hollingsworth, CIO.

Texas Wesleyan Bar Pass Rate Continues to Soar

GavelTexas Wesleyan University School of Law achieved another high performance on the Texas Bar Exam and improved its first-time bar passage rate to 87.94 percent, scoring higher than the state average. This is the highest bar passage rate in the history of the law school.
The performance on this bar exam ranked Texas Wesleyan fifth out of Texas' nine law schools. Three of the four schools that ranked higher scored just two percentage points better than Texas Wesleyan. Those schools were the University of Texas, the University of Houston, and Southern Methodist University. Texas Wesleyan continues to regularly score at or above the statewide average.
Interim Dean Cynthia Fountaine said that this performance directly correlates to the emphasis the school's distinguished faculty has placed on quality of instruction. "Our faculty is a group of very active and engaged scholars who are committed to excellence," Fountaine said. "They have dedicated themselves to ensuring that our students are prepared for the bar by the time they graduate, and the bar results affirm they are indeed doing the right things both in and out of the classroom to ensure that our students succeed."

School of Law Moot Court Team Wins Another Competition

GavelTexas Wesleyan University School of Law's moot court team has won another championship!  The team, which included Chris Norris, Anndi Queenan, and Justin Sisemore, and was coached by Professor Jana McCreary, won first place at theTwenty-Fifth Annual John Marshall Law School International Moot Court Competition in Information Technology and Privacy Law and received the Best Petitioner's Brief award. This international competition took place in Chicago, Illinois Oct. 26-28.

Chris Norris, who argued both sides for the Texas Wesleyan team and wrote the brief, said, "For me, the most rewarding experience was arguing complex legal issues in front of jurists from every level of the state judiciary, in addition to judges from the federal district courts and court of appeals. We earned their respect to the point that one state supreme court justice told me he would hate to argue a case opposite us in the real world, which made me all the more proud to tell him we represent Texas Wesleyan."

The Texas Wesleyan team competed against twenty-five other teams from American law schools, as well as against teams from law schools in Australia and India.
