University College Day: Tuesday, April 1
D'Ann Petersen, regional economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, will be the keynote speaker for University College Day at Texas Wesleyan University. Petersen will give the keynote address at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, in Martin Hall. The address is free and open to the public. University College Day celebrates the scholarly activity of students and faculty by providing them with the opportunity to take part in presentations, panel discussions, art projects and multi-disciplinary events. Presentations and discussions will take place from 10:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Eunice and James L. West Library orientation room and gallery and may include a variety of topics: literature, science, math, social studies or even theater or music. The sessions are free and open to the public.
Petersen's duties with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas include analyzing regional economic conditions and conducting in-depth research on topics important to the Texas economy. She publishes research finding in the Southwest Economy, business journals, and other publications. Petersen earned a Bachelor of Science in economics from Texas A&M University and a Master of Arts in applied economics from Southern Methodist University.

Farewell Reception for Ashley Porterfield
International Programs will host a farewell reception for Ashley Porterfield, international student advisor, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27, in the University Club. Porterfield will be leaving Texas Wesleyan on March 28 to move to Dallas with her husband. All faculty and staff are invited to stop by and wish her well. |
Jeans Days for Relay for Life: Thursday, March 27, and Thursday, April 3
Student Life is sponsoring two Jeans Days to help the Texas Wesleyan Relay for Life Team raise money. The first Jeans Day will be Thursday, March 27; the second day will be Thursday, April 3. Each person that donates $5 (for each day) will get a ticket showing that you are eligible to wear jeans. Please donate to this worthy cause and help the campus team meet its fundraising goal. All Alumni Reunion April 18 and 19
 Join your fellow alumni for the Texas Wesleyan All Alumni Reunion on Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19. Friday’s activities include a picnic in front of the Eunice and James L. West Library followed by a spirit rally with performances from former and current cheerleaders. After the spirit rally, it is on to LaGrave Field to watch the Rams Varsity Baseball Team take on Southwestern Assemblies of God University. Upcoming Music Concerts: Duo-Piano, Duisen Duo, and Third Annual Alumni Invitational Recital
The second concert in the Barr Duo-Piano Concert Series will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27, in Martin Hall, and feature John Fisher, professor of music, and Bruce McDonald, visiting assistant professor of religion and philosophy. Fisher and McDonald will perform music from the 20th century, including Prokofiev's Sonata No. 3 in A minor, and Copland's El Salón México.
The Duisen Duo, comprised of violinist Ordabek Duisen and his sister Dina, will play a recital of music for solo violin and piano by Mozart, Franck, Bartok and Busilovsky at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in Martin Hall. Dina is currently the accompanist for adjunct Wesleyan music faculty member Joe Davisson. She and her brother are natives of the Republic of Kazakhstan and have played many concerts together in various parts of the world.
The Third Annual Alumni Invitational Recital will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in Martin Hall. Stan Graner, '81, will sing selections by Broadway composers, including Stephen Sondheim, Craig Coleman, Leonard Bernstein, and Cole Porter. Ryan Strittmatter, '02, will perform on classical guitar.

Forum: Innovative Teaching with Technology
As new technologies are introduced into the classroom, instructors are empowered to tailor their instruction to the needs of students and connect the classroom to the world outside. Join Chitra Chandrasekaran, associate professor of biology, and Mary Anne Clark, professor of biology, on Tuesday, April 8, as they demonstrate some of these new instructional possibilities. Topics will include how bioinformatics technology is used as a collaborative instructional tool, and the use of interactive communities (such as Second Life) in education.

Presentation: Differentiating Instruction for English Language Learners
Texas Wesleyan will host guest speaker Jill Kerper Mora of San Diego State University for a presentation, "Differentiating Instruction for English Language Learners: The 4 X 4 Model of Integrated Thematic Language and Content Instruction." This professional development opportunity will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 4, in the Louella Baker Martin Pavilion. The presentation will cover:
- How L2 oral language and literacy develops for ELLs across ages

- Research on different rates of development of listening, speaking, reading and writing
|
- Designing curriculum, classroom instructional strategies and activities according to students’ levels of English proficiency and literacy achievement

Rams Season Comes to a Close
A great season came to an end in the first round of the 2008 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship when McKendree University topped Texas Wesleyan 73-71 in first-round action. The Rams won the Red River Athletic Conference regular season championship this season with a conference record of 12-4. Overall, Texas Wesleyan finished at 20-12 for the season. DeLotto Receives Award from the Texas College English Association
Jeffrey DeLotto, professor of English at Texas Wesleyan, received the Joe D. Thomas Award for Excellence in Teaching, Scholarship, and Service from the Texas College English Association at its annual conference on March 1. DeLotto also organized and presented a panel discussing the evolving definitions of "publication" in the profession.
