Reunion for Former Texas Wesleyan Basketball Players

Rams logoFormer Texas Wesleyan athletes who played under the late coach Elmer Hanebutt are holding a reunion Friday, June 15, and Saturday, June 16. Hanebutt coached for 13 seasons (1956-69) and had an overall record of 160-180, making him the winningest men's basketball coach in Texas Wesleyan history. Hanebutt's teams won four Big State Conference Championships including three in a row (1958-60). His best season was 1958-59, when the team went 19-7 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the Big State Conference. That team featured one All-American in Don Rees, who is the school's second all-time leading scorer at 1,710 points. To view photos from the 1959 yearbook, click here.

Hanebutt's teams still hold school records for field goals made in a game (59), free throws made in a game (43), field goal percentage in a season (50%), and free throw percentage in a season (76.5%). He coached several of the school's all-time leading scorers, including Rees (2nd), Irvin Rue (3rd, 1,709), David Webber (6th, 1,417), Pete Brown (10th, 1,220), Jody Giesler (14th, 1,152), and Bill White (15th, 1,133).

For more information about the reunion, call Pete Brown at 214-695-8910 or Bill White at 972-854-1655.
