Denzel Washington Visits Texas Wesleyan

movie slate Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington visited Texas Wesleyan last week as part of a trip to scout locations for an upcoming film. Washington – whose film credits include Mo’ Better Blues, Mississippi Masala, Glory, Training Day, Cry Freedom, Malcolm X, The Pelican Brief, Crimson Tide, Antwone Fisher, and Remember the Titans – will be directing the 2008 movie. Laura Hanna, director of communications, gave the tour to Washington and the others in his group, who were from Los Angeles and Dallas. In May, Hanna worked with a Los Angeles film scout, who shot a multitude of photos to bring back for the director to review. No decisions have been made yet on when the next round of site visits would occur or when specific locations will be chosen.

Photo of Ben Hunt in Mavs uniformBen Hunt has been selected to the Mavericks summer roster and will compete in the Summer Pro League in Los Angeles. In March, Hunt scored a three-pointer at the buzzer to clinch a Rams 67-65 victory over Oklahoma City University and the NAIA Division I Championship. Hunt has already signed a two-year contract with the Perth Wildcats, of Australia’s National Basketball League. He traveled to Qatar with the Wildcats in May to take on the Qatar national team, then returned to Fort Worth to complete his degree.

While some of the Mavericks will be competing in Las Vegas and Utah this summer, Hunt will be with a group playing in the Summer Pro League in Los Angeles. The Summer Pro League, which runs from July 8-19, will feature players from four NBA teams: the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Washington Wizards. Ram fans can continue to follow Hunt by visiting the SPL's official website at www.summerproleague.com or by following the link on ramsports.net.

Business School Faculty News

Photo of Sandy HartSandra Hart, professor of marketing, attended the Academic Business World International Conference, held May 29 through June 3 in Nashville, Tennessee. Her presentation on "What U.S. Colleges Can Learn from the Irish-American Scholar Program" covered the different types of study-abroad programs and the advantages of the Business Education Initiative (BEI) in preparing students for working in a global environment. The BEI program provides an excellent model, allowing students to live and study with U.S. students and - in some instances - hold an internship with American businesses. For more than ten years, students have attended 100 Methodist, Presbyterian and Catholic universities and colleges. Texas Wesleyan has been an active participant with many students from Northern Ireland studying on campus. The British government has provided much of the financial support to assist students in gaining a global outlook, understanding business, representing Northern Ireland and supporting the peace initiative.

After the preliminary questionnaire is reviewed by the University's mentor, the University will finish the self-study report and submit it to the accreditation committee, who, after review of the self study report, will make a campus visit and a decision on the University's request for accreditation.
