Teaching Circles: Orientation Meeting
For many faculty members, opportunities to talk about teaching are limited to brief encounters with colleagues in the hallways. During these encounters, there is rarely enough time to discuss the more substantive and stimulating teaching and learning issues. If you’re interested in having deeper conversations about teaching and learning, now you will have your chance. Wesleyan is creating Cross-Discipline Teaching Circles. A Teaching Circles orientation meeting will be held from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in the University Club. Lunch will be provided by the Office of the Provost. All interested in participating should attend.

New Project out to Help the Entire Neighborhood with Transportation and Credit Recovery
A new program for students, faculty, staff, neighbors and friends may have the answer for someone you know. The program, Ways to Work, which is grant funded and provided by the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and Capitol One, helps people find dependable transportation at an affordable price with a very low interest rate. A person does not have to live or work in Arlington or be a student to qualify.
One of Ways to Work's goals is to assist the community in getting better, more reliable transportation to support job sustainability and employee retention. Decent used cars, such as Toyotas and Hondas (since these cars last through 200,000 miles, they are a more reliable form of transportation) are purchased from the auto auction. The cars are completely repaired (so there are no worries that the car will break down in a few months) and are sold for up to $4,000, with 8 percent or less interest rate, and 2 years to pay off the loan. The program even helps with affordable auto insurance.
Another goal of the program is to provide the community the opportunity to improve financial literacy, obtain a better credit rating, experience higher self-esteem, and a higher quality of life through economic self-sufficiency. The program has four classes (two hours each) that can be taken all in one day or spread out over a couple of days. Ways to Work is credited with helping increase stabilization of employment situations, asset-building and economic self-sufficiency. To learn more about the program, or see if you qualify, contact Sherri Mata at careerservices@txwes.edu or 817-531-6552 for a referral. You may also learn more about the Ways to Work program at www.waystowork.org.
