Music Scholarship Benefit Concert: Mikhail Barash
Mikhail Barash, international violinist and new Wesleyan board member, will present a music scholarship benefit recital at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 28, in Martin Hall. Barash has chosen a program of world-renowned violin solos, including Csardas by Monti, Liebesleid and Liebesfreud by Fritz Kreisler, Schubert’s Ave Maria, The Swan by Saint-Saëns, John Williams’ Theme from Schindler’s List, and more. A reception will follow in the Louella Baker Martin Pavilion. Both events are free and open to the public. The concert and reception are sponsored by the Office of the President, the Office of Advancement, the Office of Alumni Relations, and the Music Department. Donations will benefit music scholarships. 38th Annual Business Hall of Fame Honors Bob R. Simpson
Bob R. Simpson, Chairman and President of XTO Energy, Inc., will be honored Tuesday, Oct. 2, as Fort Worth’s Business Executive of the Year during the 38th annual Fort Worth Business Hall of Fame dinner. The event is sponsored by Texas Wesleyan University, the Fort Worth Business Press and the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds from the event benefit the Texas Wesleyan University School of Business Administration and Professional Programs by providing scholarships for business students.
Simpson will also speak at Texas Wesleyan at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Martin Hall. All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.
Simpson and the XTO Energy family have received many recognized honors and accolades for the success of the company. XTO ranks as the 4th best performing stock on the NYSE since its initial public offering in 1993. As a result, Simpson has been recognized by BARRON’S as one of their “30 Most Respected CEOs in the World” for three years in a row. Oil and Gas Investor magazine named Simpson their “Executive of the Year” in 2006. Additionally, Institutional Investor magazine named him in their “Best CEO’s” issue in January 2006.
XTO has revived multiple buildings in the downtown district as its headquarters. XTO is also aiding area youth by purchasing the grand champion steer at the Fort Worth Stock Show with the proceeds going to educational scholarships.

Texas Wesleyan University Establishes Fund to Help Victims of Fire Tragedy
Texas Wesleyan University has established a fund – the Green Children’s Fund – to assist the children who were seriously burned in a tragic event in Haltom City. Ariania Green, 3, the youngest of the victims, died Sept. 18. Alexandria, 5, and Adamiria, 7, remain hospitalized. Their grandmother is Debra Flowers, assistant director of the Graduate Program in Nurse Anesthesia. Her son, Adam, is father to the three girls.
Anyone wishing to contribute to the fund can make checks payable to the Green Children’s Fund c/o Texas Wesleyan University. Payments can be dropped off at the Office of Advancement or mailed to:

210 Texas Wesleyan Freshmen Need Your Help
The Freshman Mentorship Program is beginning its matching process for the 2007-2008 school year. This year the Freshman Mentorship Program is mandatory for all 210 freshmen; your help is needed! The Freshman Mentorship Program’s goal is to increase freshmen involvement and retention. Mentors responsibilities include at least three meetings with their student each semester and calling their student during registration times to encourage them to register. The meetings can include coffee breaks, going to campus games, or simply, a causal meeting. Mentors will be provided with a list of possible activities on or off campus for these meetings.

2007 Willson Lecture Series: Dr. Stacey Floyd-Thomas
Dr. Stacey Floyd-Thomas, co-founder of the nationally acclaimed Black Religious Scholars Group and director of Black Church Studies at Brite Divinity School, will be the featured speaker during the 2007 Willson Lecture Series at Texas Wesleyan University. She will talk about the permanence of racism, the erasure of eduation, and the relevance of religion.
The lecture will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Martin Hall, with a reception immediately following. Admission is free. The event is sponsored by the chaplain’s office.
Floyd-Thomas is the associate professor of ethics and director of Black Church Studies at Brite Divinity School of Texas Christian University. She holds degrees from Vassar College, Candler School of Theology and Temple University. As a theologian, scholar, professor, and pastoral counselor, her scholarly research and social activism has been dedicated to examining the effects that institutions such as the church, higher education, family, and government have had on defining marginalized groups and these groups’ undertaken tasks to define their own identities. She is a sought-after lecturer and scholar who has taught and lectured throughout the United States as well as in Egypt, England, France, Italy, Japan, and West Africa. She has also written three books: Mining the Motherlode: Methods in Womanist Ethics, Deeper Shades of Purple: Womanism in Religion and Society and Black Church Studies: An Introduction.

Arlington Heights UMC Chancel Choir Fall Pops Concert
The Chancel Choir of Arlington Heights United Methodist Church wil perform in "The Lord's Acre Fall Pops Concert" at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, in the sanctuary of the church. The concert is free and open to the public, and will feature the music of Paul Simon and Cole Porter. The Chancel Choir is conducted by Stephen Simons, professor of music at Texas Wesleyan, and accompanied by Alice Walker '84, and Stan Graner. A reception in the atrium will follow the performance. Arlington Heights UMC is located at 4200 Camp Bowie Blvd., Fort Worth.

Alex Vorse, BA '04, and Brad Jackson, who attended Wesleyan, were featured in Sunday's edition of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram for their work with Casa Mañana. Jackson has written nine shows for Casa Mañana Children’s Playhouse. Jackson and Vorse have collaborated on several recent productions, including Jack and the Beanstalk. Volleyball Raffle: Spa Package
The Texas Wesleyan volleyball team is selling $20 raffle tickets for a spa treatment at Coldwater Creek Spa valued at more than $200. All proceeds go to support the Wesleyan Volleyball Program. The raffle wil be held between games two and three on Tuesday, Oct. 23, during the home match versus Southern Nazarene University. You must be present to win. Tutoring Center Looking for Students, Volunteers
HOPE Tutoring Center, Inc, is a Methodist, faith-based, non-profit organization that offers free tutoring to students in the fourth through eighth grades. Free tutoring is offered at Arlington-area churches from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. or from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
HOPE is looking for both students and volunteer tutors. Parents of interested students must bring their payroll check stubs or a copy of the free and reduced lunch letter from Arlington Independent School District. The student must also bring their last grade report.
One hour of required training for volunteers will be provided from 3 to 4 p.m. or from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays OR Thursdays throughout the months of September and October at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 2020 S.
