TEXAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY AND POLYTECHNIC CHURCH TO CELEBRATE WESLEYAN SUNDAY The public is invited to join the Texas Wesleyan and Polytechnic communities for fellowship and fun during Wesleyan Sunday. Services begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Polytechnic United Methodist Church. Dr. Robert Flowers, pastor of Polytechnic UMC, will officiate, and Wesleyan student and Methodist Student Movement secretary Elizabeth Cumpton will give the sermon. A reception will be held in the parlor immediately after the service. Polytechnic UMC is located at 1310 Collard St., Fort Worth, 76105 A Methodist church has always been located on the campus of the University, beginning with the small wooden church that began in 1892, known as Polytechnic Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The original congregation, just 36 members, consisted largely of faculty and students of the college. The church has moved locations three times since, always due to ever-increasing membership. The Fine Arts Auditorium, with its message on the lintel “Come Unto Me,” was home to the congregation from 1909 to 1921.While it was being constructed, chapel services were held in the basement of what is now the Oneal-Sells Administration Building. Construction on the current Polytechnic United Methodist Church was completed in 1952. In 2005, the University finished extensive renovations to the church that included the Betty and Bobby Bragan Fellowship Hall and the remodeling of several classroom, conference, and faculty office areas. The second and third floors of the church are home to the University's humanities faculty and chaplain's office. For more information about Wesleyan Sunday, contact Lynette Morones at 817-531-4401.
